A sophomore at Jefferson, Annika is in her first year of Journalism as a class, and her second year of being part of the tjTODAY staff. As someone who aspires to have a future career in the humanities, though she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do, she is one of the few people at Jefferson who can say that they came for the arts. Along with constantly yelling about how much she has procrastinated and being over dramatic about how hard her life is, you can find Annika on the water, as a member of the Jefferson crew team.

Shown in front of a crowd of people, senior Alice Ji stands with her acrylic self portrait, “When I start with a painting, I have one main subject that I want to be the focal point, and smaller things I want to draw with it. Paintings become a cluster of these two: Around the person, I like to have more fantastical elements,” Ji said. Several of her portraits focus on people due to the level of depth and detail she can invest into them, “As for what inspires me to create art, I paint people because I feel its a lot easier to express emotion or tell stories when there is a person in it. For me, its just the fundamental idea of making something that you love,” Ji said.

Senior Nicholas Rising lifts weights during one of the first crew conditioning sessions of the year. Jefferson crew team members spend about half of their conditioning time in the weight room. “Just trying to push as hard as you can with your legs—it’s such a simple thing and it allows you to focus your entire mind on it,” Rising said.
