Jefferson’s science fair goes virtual

The TV show “Shark Tank” helped inspire the founders of Commas Club. In fact, they have even incorporated it into one of their big club events. “Obviously, we [the founders] are all big fans of “Shark Tank”, and we realized that's a good way we can help people who've already built out their pitch over the past couple of years, at TJ or before we're even outside of school,” senior Arul Nigam said. “They could bring their pitches and it'll be a fun event for everyone. Not only is it good for practicing your pitches, which are important, but it can also help us discern which ideas the TJ community can get to work on and can best spend their effort.”

Junior Senna Keesing, who ran the Fiction Writing Special, discusses what makes fiction good or bad and what makes this type of writing so appealing. “I learned a lot of interesting things,” Keesing said. “I saw the perspective of those who prefer to write science fiction more, because I’m not one of those people. Our sponsors, Ms. Glotfelty and Ms. Henry, brought up essays by Mark Twain that justify writing with consistent or inconsistent style or things that I thought were really interesting points to bring up.”

Social Studies teacher Mr. Sacks goes over the curriculum in the America and the World Since 1989 semester course and 20th Century World semester course. The Curriculum Fair is helpful to students who are still looking to complete their required history credit. “I initially went to Inquiry Into Ideas [a philosophy course] looking for a social studies elective to fill part of my fourth credit, but I actually had no idea that the class was that interesting,” freshman Jessica Chung said.

American Computer Science League (ACSL) is an organization that arranges computer science contests for all grade-levels. One of those contests is the ACSL contest, which is made up of four rounds. “Once the team gets decided, which is decided by the top scores in the contests that you take throughout the year, they get sent to the national competition,” sophomore Nilima Khanna said. The national competition is the ACSL All-Star Contest, which will take place on May 23, 2020.

Senior Victor Xia demonstrates flowers, a move Xia describes as following a mathematical rose curve, to more experienced newcomers. “Most performance arts are in the light, so the idea of performing in the dark was a fresh experience,” Xia said. “Poi is one of the most visually impactful acts at iNite. If you feel intimidated by how hard everything looks, majority of the people in poi were also completely new when they joined.”
