Behind the intimidating exterior of quantum physics is a world filled with many different worlds. The amount of interpretations of quantum physics are almost endless, and the Quantum Physics club aims to explore as many as they can. “In our club, we would have a discussion about what our favorite quantum interpretation is, or what we think is the ‘correct quantum physics interpretation. To give an example: the Many Worlds Interpretation says that for each decision we make another universe in which we would make an alternate decision is also created simultaneously,” club president and junior Rick Yoon said. “I find these interpretations really interesting because each one of them is so different from one another.”

The Jefferson tennis courts are where new players develop into experienced leaders on the court. Untouched by the school tennis teams for over a year, it fosters a sense of nostalgia for returning players. “The individual games were sometimes really close, which we had to persevere through-- we did a pretty good job of that. We won a lot of the closer games, which helped us win the match against Marshall. Essentially, coming out in the crucial moments helped us a lot,” senior Ajay Prabhakar said.

Although this year’s puzzle hunt is virtual, many of the rewarding experiences still remain the same. “When you solve a puzzle, you get this flash of euphoria. Its so much better as a puzzle maker because you get to make those moments, and you get to experience those moments while youre testing them,” senior Joshua Lian and Quizbowl Tournament Director, said.

Jefferson’s football team plays a game with rows of empty bleachers. With the recent changes made to this athletic season, there are many ways students can interact with players-- at home and in-person. “This benefits those who are playing sports for the first time in particular because their families want to see them compete. Honestly, its a benefit across the board for all families. Although streaming is alive and available to everybody, I dont think its the same. In my opinion, its a little bit better when watching games in person,” Director of Student Athletics Rusty Hodges said.

This year’s virtual Pi Miller is hosted by this year’s sophomore class council. It’s great to get to know people and see the creative side of TJ. Already, some of our submissions are very creative and interesting to watch, and we cant wait to kind of show them with the rest of our students. Overall, it’s been really fun getting to know other people. I myself am not very athletic, but its nice to get outside and feel the sunshine again,” sophomore secretary Christina Han said.

The up and coming podcast, “What’s Up With TJ?,” explores the current events in the Jefferson community. “Its a big commitment for me and the guests on my show. However, its definitely something I want to do throughout all four years of my career in high school because its fun. I feel like Im really helping people who are in need as well as people who just want to vent,” freshman Ebba Cha said.

Due to the pandemic, many academic competitions are being held online. Although the testing environment is different this year, Jefferson’s clubs manage to find ways to let students enjoy the competitions. “Math contests, especially that AMC, impact a lot of TJ students. Normally, we have an entire eighth period dedicated to the AMC. For some students, they like to see their improvement over the years. Boiling that down to a single number-- it is really satisfying when you see that go up. For others, it might be a contest that theyre passionate about. Overall, it is a fun, accessible event for all of TJ because unlike physics or chemistry, everyone at TJ has learned math,” Varsity Math Team captain and senior Derek Dong said.

Ion - the TJ Intranet platform - is one of the services run by Jefferson’s Sysadmins. “Each Sysadmin specializes in a category. The purpose of the understudy program is to allow the understudies to discover what they want to specialize in as a Sysadmin. Part of what my job will be is to delegate that task to an Understudy, make sure that they do a good job, and maybe guide them along the way where I can,” senior Alexander Black said.

After being refused service, African-American demonstrators occupied a lunch counter in Nashville, Tennessee during the year of 1960. “One thing I am really excited about is the opportunity for students to examine how African Americans are not a monolith group and that there is a lot of diversity within the ethnic group. Being able to look at areas of intersectionality can help us better understand how that particular ethnic group is diverse within itself along with how different perspectives and viewpoints vary,” assistant principal Cynthia Hawkins said.

The new 8th period club TJ Sends Love hopes to engage students in activities that help the community. “We both thought that its really lonely to be there [hospitals] because, during that time, a lot of hospitals weren’t allowing visitors. I thought it would be really lonely to stay there for such a long time during the pandemic-- especially as a kid. So, we wanted to do something to help cheer them up,” sophomore Katelyn Chen said.
