Even with the Advanced Placement (AP) season, upcoming finals and the end of another school year, TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s (TXT) new digital single “Love Language” brings refreshing vibes for me to prepare for the summer. This song has been one of the best releases of this year and has been on repeat for me.
On Friday, May 2, K-pop boy band TXT released “Love Language,” a romantic afro-house inspired song that was paired with a music video following the members through various locations in Spain.
Romantic concepts are familiar grounds for TXT, seen through songs like “Deja Vu,” “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)” and “Anti-Romantic,” where the members sing about their sufferings due to love and a lack of mutual connection. The factor separating “Love Language” from their past releases is found in their concept and message of the song. Their message is more direct and displays a youthful devotion for love compared to their more sacrificial love concepts. It’s a different side of TXT that I hope they explore more in the future.
“What’s your love language?” is one of the key lyrics throughout the song, with its catchy melody making it hard to not sing along. The lyrics that were co-written by HUENINGKAI reflect the members’ transition to a more passionate romantic phase. This passionate phase is seen in the post-chorus of the song, where SOOBIN sings “tea-tea-teach me/All about your love language,” reflecting their headstrong approach towards love. Yet, the verses still show the playfulness in love: “Even the slight brush of hands/Even familiar words/Make me question their meaning/I find myself lost in thought again.” It shows that this is their first time falling in love, a feeling that many fans can relate to. The lyrics of the song fit hand in hand with the visuals served for this era of TXT.
In their music video filmed in Spain, the members play with each other in the pool, the urban streets and throughout the patio and backyard of a house. The music video is directed by Kwon Yongsoo, a director that has worked with multiple K-POP groups such as Ateez, Enhypen, NMIXX and more. The direction of the music video has a perfect mix of the members having fun and performing to the song. The quick cuts between spotlights on individual members, duos and the whole group and TXT provide the perfect viewing experience where fans can see each member shine as well as the whole group’s interaction with each other.
Though it was only a digital single release, fans were delivered with an amazing music video and so much extra content on social media. With interaction between other K-POP groups dancing to TXT’s “What’s your LL?” dance challenge, they invited their fans to join into the dance challenge. There are two versions of the challenge, and even though I’m not a dancer I had to join in on this trend with my friend because of how cute the dance was. Besides their dance challenges, TXT released a collection of “Lovetoons” on their social media depicting caricatures of each member figuring out their own love language. These caricatures have quickly become loved by fans because of their attention to detail for each of the members. With all of these things that TXT has given us, I cannot believe this song is just a digital single and not the title track to an upcoming album.
TXT’s “Love Language” sets up the perfect mood for a refreshing summer full of yearning for that one person. After all, all we want to know is what’s your love language?”
