Jefferson students recognized in regional art competition

On Jan. 31, the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers announced the winners of the regional Scholastic Art Awards. Nine Jefferson students were recognized, some for multiple awards.

Seniors Melanie Kim, Helen Lai, Lucia Liu and Edward Reinsel received Gold Key awards; seniors Melanie Kim and Lucia Liu, junior Emily Barrett and sophomore Simran Singh received Silver Key awards; and senior Melanie Kim received a Certificate of Merit. The awards were given based on artistic excellence in categories ranging from photography to digital art to drawing. All Gold Key-winning art will be entered into the national Scholastic competition. Winners of the national competition are eligible for scholarship prizes.

Fairfax County Public Schools will host an Award Recognition Ceremony and gallery of winning artworks at the Northern Virginia Community College on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m.

“The Scholastic competition is always very competitive at the high school level,” art teacher Tim Davis said. “This was a good year. We had strong work.”
