Students and clubs prepare for Techstravaganza

TWIST members try out the Van der Graaff Generator in preparation for Techstravaganza.

Techstravaganza, an event is sponsored by Tomorrow’s Women in Science and Technology (TWIST) and Biology Society, will be held on April 20.

The event offers demonstrations as well as hands-on labs for elementary and middle school students throughout Northern Virginia. The activities range from extracting banana DNA to understanding static electricity. The event is attracting hundreds of volunteers from around the community, including teachers and students and is also sponsored by companies such as Raytheon and Exxon Mobil.

“TWIST holds weekly meetings after school on Thursdays, and we’ve met on teacher work days and also during spring break to make sure we’ve gotten everything done,” said junior Victoria Li, Techstravaganza coordinator for TWIST.

In addition to the labs managed by TWIST and Biology Society, other science and technology clubs are also sponsoring booths at the event. They have been closely working together to gather all supplies needed, finalize the volunteer list, print posters and write-ups and communicate with other club officers.

“We’re aiming for the event to be more successful than it was last year,” Li said. “So personally, I’m expecting something that will make all the work we put into it completely worth it.”
