On April 22, Student Government Association (SGA) released applications for the 2026-2027 ExComm on Ion. Many students have heard this name before – but what exactly is ExComm, and what do they do?
“ExComm is [short for] Executive Committee,” freshman ExComm Specialist Sabrina Lee said. “It is a group of people that work together with our SGA officers to help plan events and [create] things that are related to those school events.”
ExComm tackles various subject matters, meaning that the work must be divided up between different committees.
“We are split into four subcommittees: Policy, Activities, Communications and Technology,”junior SGA President Landon Huie said. “The subcommittees have a set of tasks each day, whether that be something related to student advocacy [or] making an Instagram post.”
Specialists, who are required to show up to the SGA eighth period at least twice a week, are active members of their respective committees.
“My role as a specialist is to help [inform] interns and [people who are new to] SGA of what we do in our respective committees,” Lee said. “As a [Communications] Specialist, I make posts, reels and announcements for our school wide events. All of the announcements that you see online on Ion, Schoology and on the morning announcements are all written by [the Communications Committee].”
Directors carry a slightly larger weight compared to interns and specialists.
“As a director, [I’m] in charge of all the specialists,” Senior Policy Director Moubon Ray Kurukumbi said. “I help organize the town hall [and] come up with initiatives. We’ve been doing an open forum series throughout the year where people can submit open forum ideas to a Google Form, so we sort through those and we figure out what we can act on.”
The SGA officer team also plays an integral role in ExComm by allocating assignments to different committees.
“As SGA president, I am the one delegating tasks,” Huie said. “When teachers and administration need to contact SGA, they will usually contact one of the officers, and then we would delegate the task to its respective committee. While I haven’t been the President for long, I’ve been working alongside the rest of our team and I really look up to the amount of work they do.”
As a lesser-known component of SGA, ExComm is a very connected community of students.
“My favorite part of ExComm is the people,” Huie said. “I think this year especially we’ve fostered a very welcoming environment for our current interns, specialists, directors and officers. We are a very tight-knit community and we’ve become a lot bigger [compared to] previous years.”
For underclassmen, ExComm is a great way to connect with older students and learn from upperclassmen.
“My favorite part of ExComm is that we are all kind of like a family,” Lee said. “We all know each other. As an underclassman, I get to know my upperclassmen better and learn how [Jefferson] works through them.
Being a part of ExComm can also provide various benefits for leadership-driven students.
“[ExComm] helped me with leadership, because I was in charge of a team of people and had to get certain tasks done,” Kurukumbi said. “I [also] want to do law and work in government, so I got to look behind the scenes of how a school runs and how an [administration] runs it.”
Though ExComm may not be widely recognized across the Jefferson student body, it has greatly influenced SGA as a whole.
“To describe it in one sentence, ExComm is the foundation of SGA,” Huie said. “Without ExComm, SGA would not exist. I’ve learned so much from ExComm and I’ve gotten to know the school staff a lot better. If I could give advice to whoever is reading this, join ExComm. If you are truly passionate about student leadership and making a change, it shouldn’t matter the title.”
