“Zootopia 1,” released in 2016, gained millions of fans with its colorful world, exciting plot and deeper meanings. The movie provided viewers with meaningful lessons and talked about many world issues, without losing its humor. I am wondering if the new movie, “Zootopia 2,” truly possesses the elements that made the first movie so unique.
“Zootopia 2” was released with incredibly high expectations from fans, as it was released a decade after the first film. But the second movie was met with mixed feedback on social media platforms, such as TikTok, Reddit and Instagram. Many fans loved the new film, and believed it captured the charm that made the first so great. On the other hand, others, including myself, think that it lacks the emotional profundity and complex plot that drove “Zootopia 1.”
Although the sequel’s characters still have their traits that the audience loved, such as Judy’s perseverance and Nick’s humor, the movie focuses more on having a plot filled with action. It is missing the powerful lessons and important themes of discrimination that were included in the first film. In my opinion, the second movie was fun to watch, but felt rather shallow compared to the first.
One of the issues I noticed was that the movie constantly chose to have action filled scenes rather than ones filled with more meaning. For example, the plot moved fast, and the movie included many quick chases, but it never discussed the emotions behind Judy and Nick’s partnership.
The first film’s meaning came from many calmer, quieter scenes, such as when Nick’s past was shown, and when he and Judy discovered the problems that were associated with a divided world. Meanwhile, “Zootopia 2” overlooked moments associated with character development.
Although “Zootopia 2” has a few flaws, the movie was still a huge success, and had many strengths. Similar to the first movie, Judy and Nick’s friendship remains strong, and is built on trust and understanding. Both movies contain humor and comedy. Additionally, the fast paced scenes and action in the second film entertained many young viewers. Even though I believe that the movie should have had a few more meaningful scenes, I agree that “Zootopia 2” recaptured some important elements that made up the first film.
“Zootopia 2” tries to revisit the world and plot fans loved and adored, but fails to include moments that made the first film so great. Although fans love its action based entertainment, it forgot to deliver the emotional themes that made “Zootopia 1” more than just talking animals.
