News Brief: Jefferson’s men’s swim team sets two records at regionals

Breaking the previous record in the 100 Breast, senior Micheal Zhang makes the automatic All-American cut with a time of 55.01 seconds and is currently seeded second for the upcoming states meet.

Last Friday and Saturday, Jefferson’s varsity swim team attended the Occoquan Region meet at Oak Marr Recreational Center. Prelims occurred on Friday after school and the top 16 swimmers for each event qualified to Finals on Saturday.

During the prelims, senior Michael Zhang smashed the previous regional record in the 100m Breast with a time of 55.01 seconds, earning him an automatic All-American cut! Additionally, sophomore Beck Hastings broke the previous regional record in the 500m Freestyle during the finals, with a time of 4:39.09 seconds.

Zhang and Hastings also swam under the previous regional records in the 200m Individual Medley and 200m Freestyle respectively, but they each placed second in those events. Overall, the boys’ swim team placed 3rd.
