Students plan to design aquaponics

Senior Arisa Smith lists necessary materials in preparation to build the food production system.

The Environmental Science Club plans to create a food production system using aquaponics.

The members decided they will be using goldfish in their aquaculture because these fish are the sturdiest. The feces of these fish add nitrogen to the water, which enhances plant development. The students are planning on electrically pumping the nutrient-filled water into the pots of the plants. The filtered water from the plants will then be cycled back into the fish tank.

“I think this is a good idea because it provides many environmental benefits. We don’t have to use fertilizers or pesticides, and the system works well,” freshman Virginia Pan said.

The students are currently planning and designing the system. They ordered the materials on Dec. 5 and will start building the aquaculture on Dec.12.
