Go Club provides eighth period relaxation

Students play Go during eighth period.

Every Wednesday during eighth period A block, 25 or so students pile noisily into Room 203 and sit down with friends, waiting for a cart stacked with boards and stones to arrive.  These students are part of the Jefferson Go Club, a relaxed club, sponsored by Social Studies teacher Monte Bourjaily, that gives students an opportunity to play one of the oldest games in the world.

Go is an ancient Chinese two-player board game with simple rules. However, it incorporates extremely complicated strategy.  The Go Club has some experienced players while many others are just beginners having a good time challenging their brain.  Some people even watch other games or teach others strategy if they aren’t playing a game themselves.

“Go club is very relaxing compared to the ordinary rigors of the school day,” said freshman Minsoo Choi. “I try to come every week.”
