Jefferson’s branch of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), one of the many eighth period clubs, recently hosted a drive for Jill’s House, a non-profit organization that aims to foster and assist children needing special care.

The club will be accepting items that range from toys and art supplies to batteries and other types of utility items, such as tissues, detergent and aluminum foil. Students are able to donate items until March 28 to room 222WK.

“It always makes me happy to see kids who are not as privileged realize that people actually care about them,” sophomore Shritika Dahal, an officer of UNICEF, said.

The club, which has been conducting various types of community service activities, hopes to achieve UNICEF’s goal of aiding children suffering from inadequate conditions as well as raising awareness of the hardships.

By holding the drive, the club hopes to engage actively with the various organizations and activities outside Jefferson and broaden its realm of influence.

“I was born in Kathmandu, Nepal,” Dahal said. “When I went to visit there again, seeing kids suffer just broke my heart, and made me realize that it is not fair some children around the world are not given the same opportunities as us.”
