On Jan. 8 and 10, students in the marine biology class analyzed the anatomy of different fish as a part of their study of marine organisms. Each pair of students was given a different type of fish and a packet of characteristics so they could match the different types of fish.

Students were able to learn why certain fish had evolved certain ways and how each identifying characteristic of the fish served a specific ecological purpose.

“We’re learning about the anatomy and physiology of fish and the aspect ratios and how fish move through the water,” marine biology teacher Lisa Wu said.

Students studied the fins, mouth and gills during the lab.

“The fish was slimier than I expected,” junior Janie Choi said. “But we were observing the fish’s gills and fins under the microscope and it was incredible.”
