James Wei Huang took his own life on July 18, 2020, at the age of 16. He was a student from the TJ Class of 2021 and even part of the TJTV News team. Joe Huang, James’ father, shares how every memory of James is now bad as the guilt of having done not enough is overbearing. Recounting the day when he found James’ body and called 911, Joe didn’t believe it was possible that James could ever hurt anybody (let alone himself). He articulates the importance of checking in and extending the conversation past the standard “how are you?” to demonstrate support and love. He showcases what parents and students can do to actively care for the mental health of those around them.
For those who know a loved one possessing suicidal ideation, actively listen to what the individual is thinking and feeling. Ask the difficult question “Are you thinking about killing yourself?” to normalize conversations about mental health and treatment. Connect and check in with your loved ones over quarantine to potentially save a life.
